There have been rec posts in the past, but it's more fun to post new links! There's a ton of dece/good Zutara fic out there and I'm just going to post some of my favorites but there's a lot of big nice old ones that people like.

My personal favorite, IcyHot, a Zutara love epic that follows most conventions while remaining fresh and entertaining for everyone. Short and NSFW.

obligatory Stormbenders, Zuko and Katara go to the Fire Nation to do something and there's some OCs who appear all of once and honestly I forget most of what actually happens but it's charming and makes you grin and mostly everyone who reads it gets into it, even when we grumble about why it does not deserve this treatment. It's pretty dang IC too.

Enslaved in which "the ruling family is given a war slave as a gift" or something whatever the summary says. This fic rocks and sharkflip is cool and there's language barriers!!

Love Thy Enemy A weird AU in which Zuko and Katara are in later reincarnations of themselves, apparently Sokka and Katara are adopted and only Kyoshi Island remains out of the FN's grasp. They have flashbacks to "real" z/k, who were in love or some such thing. The author's "Hunter and the Prey" fic I've seen recced a lot but I always preferred this one.

Purity Katara and Zuko vs. The Jade Shark terrorist racists!! People who hate nonbenders and I don't really remember the plot gist of this one either, but Zuko buys food and doesn't share it with Katara at one point and that was pretty funny.

And, well, Another Brother is not exactly a Zutara fic, but I think you'd enjoy it anyway. It's an AU involving Zuko being raised by the Water Tribe, and Z/K are the best sort-of-siblings ever.

Water Tribe Epics, and AUs
If you enjoyed "Enslaved" and "Another Brother", both of which I highly recommend also, then you'd probably love this one:

Water Wedding - Author: "This was inspired by a point I saw raised once about why so many Zutara fanfics featured Katara marrying into Zuko's life and not the other way around."

I adored this story, as it was rich with both cultural world-building and thoroughly developed character themes. Zuko, Katara, Sokka, and the WT come full circle in the scope of emotions and character advancement, and the whole thing felt so genuine I almost wanted to cry by the end. It is stellar, and should be mentioned right beside those other two fics any time someone mentions a Water Tribe Epic Fanfic.

Other good AUs:

The Way it Was Meant to Be - AU for season 3, gen, possibly the faintest hints of Zutara. Zuko is imprisoned in Boiling Rock at the end of season 1 and meets Hakoda there. This is primarily an action fic, and the strongest relationship is Zuko+Hakoda, but the other characters eventually get pulled in as well. Great action, lots of angst for Zuko.

Smoke - AU season 1, one of my very favorites for escalating Zuko/Katara tension. OMG, some of the scenes in this fic... season 1 Zuko, how I miss your anger and angst. And Katara, she is... so season 1. Angry yet innocent still. And yet the fic is subtle, too...it doesn't overdo it, always just giving you ALMOST what you want instead of the whole feast. And this has a great, great alternative version of The Blue Spirit scenario.

So I have a biology exam in twelve or so hours and I just spent the last one reading through The Way It Was Meant To Be.

I'm kind of screwed over for that test wooh not getting any sleep tonight! but daaaamn if that wasn't one of the best AU's I've read in a long time!

Also, seconding the rec on "Smoke", another great AU! Fantastic scenes in it, but definitely not for the faint of heart!

Oh Zutara fandom, how I have missed your fanfiction.

Re: Water Tribe Epics, and AUs
I followed the way it was meant to be for a while! I liked it quite a lot but I haven't kept up in a long time. thanks for the recs i'll be sure to check them out :)

Re: Water Tribe Epics, and AUs
Omg, thank you for suggesting smoke! It is now one of my favorite zutara fics out there!!

Re: Water Tribe Epics, and AUs
It's fairly unfinished at this point, but the teen angst of some of the chapters (the one where Zuko's ship explodes, for example) reaches some truly fantastic levels and I giggle with glee every time it threw us teasing moments. It's also just highly enjoyable as an action/adventure AU of season 1.
Jul. 11th, 2010 05:47 pm (UTC)
even when we grumble about why it does not deserve this treatment.
What's grumbled about:the relationships/characterization or the way the tropes are set up?
I just finished this fic so I'm curious!
Jul. 11th, 2010 05:54 pm (UTC)
I mostly saw people complain that it's not that well written, that it didn't do much with the stormbending and those ninja OC folks - that sort of thing. I mean, it's been a while since the fic/new chapters were coming out and zutara was in full fling, so I only have vague memories of folks complaining about the popularity of the fic vs. its actual merit - but that happens with any big fanfic that everyone reads, so yeah xD
Jul. 11th, 2010 06:04 pm (UTC)
Oooh, I see. Well, I personally liked the author's writing style and I'm very finicky about style. :p

that it didn't do much with the stormbending and those ninja OC folks
That I agree with. Then again, I'm less nitpicky about plot devices when I know I'm reading a shipper fic.

but that happens with any big fanfic that everyone reads, so yeah xD
Lol, that is true. All big fanfics get hype backlash, eventually.
Jul. 12th, 2010 03:47 pm (UTC)
I can understand the complaint about it not being about stormbending, if you expected something else than what you got, but I still rec it as being thoroughly well-written in terms of narrative prose. I'm pretty picky about that, myself.

I think sometimes, with a highly recommended story, it can be well-done but just not what you wanted/expected.
Jul. 11th, 2010 03:45 am (UTC)
I think it also depends on what genres you like as well. Do you like crossovers, AUs, romance and/or erotica, drama, action, humor, drabbles, epic multi chapters, etc.? Stormbenders is a must read for sure and Enslaved. Ozai's Vengeance is also really, really good. I personally like Midsummer Madness and it's follow up A Net to Catch the Wind , which is still a WIP . Love Amongst the Embers is a beautiful one shot.

Again it just depends on what you like and what mood you're in. When you find an author you like, find out what stories/authors they like and then read those. It's amazing what you stumble upon.

Good hunting and happy reading!

Jul. 11th, 2010 04:27 am (UTC)
I vouch for Ozai's Vengeance (anything by Fandomme is good) and Enslaved. Also I absolutely LOVED Beyond the Rising Sun. LOVED it.
Jul. 11th, 2010 07:12 am (UTC)
I loved the first half of Beyond The Rising Sun, but my interest only just made it through to the end. I felt like it changed course and purpose somewhere in the middle, and the shift wasn't to my preference. Still, it's got some great moments with Katara bloodbending, and overall is nicely written and juicy long.
Jul. 11th, 2010 09:57 pm (UTC)
Really? I felt that way about Stormbenders. I didn't really how the ending shifted.
Jul. 11th, 2010 04:32 am (UTC)
Anything by rashaka. Fandomme is also great.

Also these:

A Warrior's Accord

Don't say a Word

Tempest in a Teacup

Thirteen Nights

are some of my favorites.
Jul. 11th, 2010 04:59 am (UTC)
Don't forget The Seventh Time!
Jul. 11th, 2010 07:13 am (UTC)
I've never read that. AWESOME. NEW FIC.
Jul. 11th, 2010 11:15 pm (UTC)
Aw shucks, well that one's not too bad I guess.
Jul. 11th, 2010 11:35 pm (UTC)
See also: "if we all rave about Fighting From The Ruins, maybe we'll get more chapters!"

Jul. 11th, 2010 07:13 am (UTC)
Thank you!

Also, "A Warrior's Accord" is WAY, WAY UP THERE with some of my all-time favorites. Couldn't agree more.
Jul. 11th, 2010 04:51 am (UTC)
Oh, a challenge! I like linking stories that don't get enough exposure, so let me dig through my ff dot net account and see what I can find in my faves.

Always the Light. Beautiful (and I don't use that word lightly) oneshot narrated by Appa. Trust me.

When the World Weighs You Down. Katara runs.

Bromance. Contains the single best reason why Zuko and Katara should get married.

A Matter of Honor. Then there's this one that gets recc'd all over the place and is really a Taang fic at heart but there are some fantastic Zutara moments in it.
Jul. 12th, 2010 07:44 am (UTC)
off topic: your icon is making me giggle like mad xD
Jul. 11th, 2010 05:06 am (UTC)
I really like Rhythm of the Rain by DamageCtrl, at least for the first half. It lags a bit towards the end, imo, but I really enjoy it.
Jul. 11th, 2010 05:13 am (UTC)
I read this a few years ago, and remember it being the definitive well-done Zuko/Katara for me. Re lagging: Bear with it, I guess, because I remember it being a satsifying read, and I'm sure you can't go wrong if you just get through to the end.

Plenty of nice self-sacrificing angst and court intrigue. And Zuko being hot.
Jul. 11th, 2010 05:59 am (UTC)
Oh, it's definitely one of my faves and I think absolutely every Zutara shipper should read it, but i just remember the ending not being as strong as the beginning, which I just love so so much!

But yes, the self-sacrificing angst and court intrigue and hot Zuko are allllllll amazing.
Jul. 11th, 2010 07:15 am (UTC)
Well, the aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaangst makes it drag quite up to romantic novel levels of ridiculous by the end, but... there's a reason people love to read romantic novels.
Jul. 11th, 2010 07:28 am (UTC)
I love Court Intrigue. Court Intrigue is one of my favorite things in fandom.

Lol, it's been a long time since I've read that story. It's quite possible the ending wasn't as good as the beginning. :D

Yeah, Rhythm in the Rain is really good-especially the first half. It includes a whole load of good ideas, very original and yeah a GREAT portrayal of Zuko (I love it when that happens) but towards the end it just seemed to drag out soo much.
Jul. 11th, 2010 05:14 am (UTC)
Don't forget Dancing in the Dark, by the same author!
Jul. 11th, 2010 05:12 am (UTC)
My personal favorite is Somewhere In Between, by AJ Rayne. It's got a sequel, too, but it doesn't seem like it'll be updated in the near future. :( Still, her other works are very much worth checking out!
Jul. 11th, 2010 05:16 am (UTC)
We have a rec tag that has a bunch of lists, so I definitely recommend going back through those.

Along with seconding the rashaka rec, I'd also recommend Vicki So's fic, especially her sillier ones--they're hilarious.

And if you can't find what you're looking for, the Zutara Fan Meme is, as far as I know, still going on, so feel free to request something too! :-)
Jul. 11th, 2010 06:41 pm (UTC)
I was coming in to rec the fan meme. It's uber fun and there really is some great fic already posted.
Jul. 11th, 2010 06:08 am (UTC)
Hi! My fave zutara stories are Lotus Lake, Captured Hearts and Dragon Jade Fire's stories. All can be found on ff.net.
Jul. 11th, 2010 06:38 am (UTC)
I rather like Merits by Moor. She also has a couple of nice Zutara one shots hidden in there. She's fantastic at world-building.
Jul. 11th, 2010 07:29 am (UTC)
We make rec lists often, so check the tags.
Book 3: Fire - great action/adventure AU for season 3. It's ongoing, and seems mostly gen at first, but there's plenty in there for zutara fans. Also, a dragon fight! That's kinda spoiling you, but seriously, IT WAS AWESOME.

Lotus Resiliens by misora - a great mid-season 3 AU that I recently reread. Thoroughly fun, full of little awesome moments and plenty of zippy dialogue.

Masako Moonshade hasn't written fic in a while, but I loved her stuff:

Shades of Chaos - a great story about early season 2 Zutara, and undercover identities, and magic spells, and trust and betrayal. So fun.

Drawn to the Blackened Skies, a season 1 one-shot, and its epic multichapter sequel Everything For A Price.

Re: We make rec lists often, so check the tags.
Book 3: Fire! SO AWESOME. And so fun to read while it was being written, because she really put a lot of effort into paying attention to her comments and incorporating people's suggestions, while not lowering the awesome level of her fic. SO GOOD.
Jul. 14th, 2010 04:08 am (UTC)
Re: We make rec lists often, so check the tags.
See, I could have said all that, which is totally true, but mostly my brain was stuck on "ZUTARA! DRAGON FIGHT! ZUTARA! DRAGONFIGHT!" because it only goes in circles on certain topics.

I second all the recommendations already made. Here's a few more:

Merits by beyondthemoor is definitely one of my favs (to the extent that I begged to be a guest writer for it). It's modern AU vampire fic that's really good because it's breaking all the eye-rolling cliches associated with that genre.

Under a Sapphire Sky by damagectrl is sort of a guilty pleasure. There's a lot of it that's not that spectacular (it started as a just-for-fun test fic), but it has a few all-time-sexiest -Zutara-ever moments. It's AU vampire fic that... doesn't break the cliches, but it's still quite a fun read.

Wait, no one's recc'd Each Other by jennibare yet? It's A++ sexy -- and culture-porn, too.

Purgatory is a dark-future one-shot with some very nice, melancholy characterization. The author has teased about follow-ups, but it stands fine on its own.

lynny17 has several short multi-chapter modern AUs that I really enjoy. Chance Encounters is sugar-sweet and too cute. A Lasting Friendship is a little OOC, but hawt. A Fire Within is unfinished but worth reading for the A++ FAILKOTARA LULZ.

Moving Through the Silence Without Motion and The Woman with a Voice of Glass by magneticwave are bittersweet and lovely future fics.

Empty Hands Full of Regret by khushiyanis a softly angsty one set during the Western Air Temple.

Finally, Fighting from the Ruins by agitated_brains is EPIC AWESOME at only two chapters thus far. Perhaps if we SHOW OUR SUPPORT, she will post more soon.

late response guh apologies
Merits was AMAZING at the beginning. I was immersed in the fic, and at times, forced to stifle my laughter. But it deteriorated at the end for me. :l I kept on hoping the story would revert back to the lightheartedness- this fic's a little heavy later... Half-way through, I began to feel a little sceptical. ._.

But by all means, read the fic if you wish. Maybe i'm being a bit harsh and long-winded, but above all, it was an enjoyable read.
Jul. 12th, 2010 12:32 am (UTC)
I'm just going to add some more that I don't think have been mentioned yet. And also, thanks for starting this thread, I feel all giddy and happy looking at all these new stories to read :D

Warmth is a lovely fic taking place after Zuko joins the Gaang at the Western Air Temple.

Lost, I only recently finished this one and loved it! It's a take on what would've happened if Katara was adopted by the Fire nation royals, and this authors other stories are pretty good reads too.

Dangerous Ground Zuko and Katara leading a rebellion and plenty of fighting and action :DDDD

Cast Me Gently into Morning Zuko gets a chance at redemption with Gure Pathik, it really explores Zuko's character wonderfully.

And, some current WIPs I'm enjoying
The Illusion of Fire", Letters Between Friends, and Little Things Give You Away
Jul. 11th, 2012 07:51 am (UTC)
I wish I could read Lost too, your description intrigued me,but the link is broken, =/ Perhaps you remember/saved the name of the author?
Jul. 12th, 2010 04:08 am (UTC)
I haven't done this in a long time let alone read any fic in ages but my favorite was always When the Mask Comes Off by lady_rai_frost.

I'd give a summary buuut...it's EPIC and that's all you need to know =P
Oct. 23rd, 2010 06:11 am (UTC)
The link you posted is broken.

I think I found the fic you were talking about though:

Is this the one?

So many great recs thus far. Glad to see some of the classics on the list and can't wait to dive into the ones I've yet to read. Before I give my rec I must second (third...forth....) Enslaved and Another Brother. If you are not reading these two fics you are most definitely missing out. Now for my rec:

What I Don't Like About You by Trombe is a collab work that is destined for the Zutara classics list

Eclipse and Varedha by Sandra Evans

I'm trying to remember one I read on livejournal....

It's modern, and Katara goes on vacation and meets Zuko when one of them sills a drink and she ends up working for him and they get all close and like... Mai ruins something I think, but I really want to read it again! Help?!?!

Stormbenders was my first Zutara fanfic. A definetly must-read for all the Zutarians. I also LOVED My Heart Burns For You, by alwaysZutarian. You'll surely find it on fanfiction.net.It's AMAZING. At first, the chapters are a little short, but then you get pages and pages of zutara love <3. It has also many chapters. Check it out! Oh, and a one-shot: I Never, by Sandra Evans. Here's the link of her profile: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1033807/
It's about some sort of game, blah blah, but it's very interesting. And Katara somehow confesses she slept with Zuko ;). Hope I got you interested! And to not forget, What I don't Like About You:http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4266645/1/
A very lovely story, with funny author notes, and Trombe and artsyelric to make you smile ( the authors) ! I'll start soon reading those recommanded ones by you, guys! And hope I helped! 8D
